SC 4-2: Population Monitoring and Decontamination Following a Nuclear/Radiological Incident

This Committee is preparing a comprehensive report on the monitoring and decontamination of members of the public who may be internally contaminated as a result of a nuclear or radiological incident such as an act of radiological terrorism. The report will include recommendations for the federal, state and local responding communities as they relate to internal contamination, decontamination, and associated laboratory needs. Of particular importance will be consideration of the breadth of information, procedures and facilities necessary to respond to the possible exposure of a general population comprising members of different ages and health status. The second meeting of this Committee was held November 14-15, 2006 at NCRP Headquarters. The Committee directed its efforts to a review and revision of the draft materials and a related revision of the report outline. Several conference calls were held during the first quarter of 2007.

The third meeting of the Committee was held March 5-6, 2007 at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia. Since this meeting, section authors have continued to expand and refine their draft materials aided by teleconferences as needed. The resulting draft report was discussed in detail during the fourth meeting of the Committee held on July 16-17, 2007 at NCRP Headquarters. This led to further revisions and expansions that have continued to be the primary focus of the Committee. A full draft report was completed and sent to NCRP Headquarters in the fourth quarter of 2008 in preparation for PAC 4 review. PAC review took place in the first quarter of 2009. Members of SC 4-2 revised the draft report in response to the PAC review and the Council review followed in July 2009. Since that time, the Committee has been responding to the Council comments and revising the text accordingly. The final contingent vote was resolved on April 6, 2010 and the report was approved for publication.
